Les Touches is situated on the Brittany Normandy border and therefore offers a great deal of activities on the doorstep from the stunning Le Mont St Michel to the Normandy Landing beaches.
Below is a list of a some of the places you may wish to visit.
Le Mont St Michel - ( 29 Km ) |
A world heritage site.
Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls Le Mont St Michel and its bay were added to the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 and is reputed to be the second most visited site in France after the Eiffel Tower.
Le Mont St Michel is a rocky tidal island in Normandy, roughly one kilometre from the coast of France at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches. It was previously connected to the mainland by a natural land bridge, which before modernisation was covered at high tide and revealed at low tide, therefore Mont St Michel gained a mystical quality of being an island half the time and attached to the land the other.
However, with the passing of time and development of the Bay the character of the Mont has been compromised somewhat and the Cousenon River has been canalised, reducing the flow of water and therefore silting up the Bay. A 150 million Euro project to build a hydraulic dam that will help remove the silt and regain Le Mont St Michel once again as a Tidal island was announced in 2006 and is expected to be completed by 2012.
As one can imagine, it can be very busy during the summer months for visiting the Mont, however during July and August it is possible to take a night-time tour of the abbey which can be spectacular on very dark, clear nights with the moonlight and also to see the Mont lit up
The good humoured rivalry between the Bretons and Normans regarding the boundary of the Mont claims that it was originally in Brittany and the Couesnon river having changed its course over the centuries has now left the Mont on the Norman side.
It is also worth noting that the salt marsh meadows surrounding the Mont are ideally suited to grazing sheep, resulting in well-flavoured lamb, more commonly called salt meadow lamb. This is a local specialty and during spring months I prepare a Navarin of Lamb for the Table d`Hote.

The Medieval town of Dinan is superb for a visit. It contains a surprisingly rich architectural heritage which you will discover during your visit ( historic houses with overhanging upper floors, the famous rue de Jerzual, "jardin anglais" garden, etc).
The wonderful citadel of Dinan has preserved almost intact its three-kilometre encirclement of
protective masonry, with street upon colourful street of late
medieval houses within.
Like St-Malo,
just 25km to the north, it's best seen when arriving
by boat up the River Rance,
which allows you to appreciate its castle and
fortifications to their best advantage.
Behind the houses
on the left bank quay where the boats tie up,
a steep and cobbled street
with fields and bramble thickets
on either side climbs up to the thirteenth-century ramparts,
partly hidden by trees.
Fougeres - with the oldest medieval castle in Europe - ( 15km ) |

Fougères' major monument is a medieval strongholdbuilt atop a granite ledge, which was part of the ultimately unsuccessful defence system of the Duchy of Brittany against French aggression, and part of a tripartate with and
Fougères also has one of only three belfries in Brittany.
Its location serves as the center of the weekend market. The belfry, built 1397, has symbolic importance funded by local merchants it allowed ordinary people access to timekeeping previously the preserve of the church and nobility. Fougères is a town of Art and History.
A sizable section of the town walls survive stretching from the château in the lower town up the hill to surround the upper town.
The citizens in the lower town were outside the fortifications and had to retreat into the fortress in times of trouble.
| The American cemetery at St James - (5 Km) |

The Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France covers 28 acres of rolling farm country near the eastern edge of Brittany and contains the remains of 4,410 of our war dead, most of whom lost their lives in the Normandy and Brittany campaigns of 1944. Along the retaining wall of the memorial terrace are inscribed the names of 498 of the missing. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.
The gray granite memorial, containing the chapel as well as two large operations maps with narratives and flags of our military services, overlooks the burial area. Stained glass and sculpture embellish the structure. The lookout platform of the tower, reached by 98 steps, affords a view of the stately pattern of the headstones, as well as of the peaceful surrounding countryside stretching northward to the sea and Mont St. Michel. The cemetery is located on the site of the temporary American St. James Cemetery, established on August 4, 1944 by the U.S. Third Army. It marks the point where the American forces made their breakthrough from the hedgerow country of Normandy into the plains of Brittany during the offensive around Avranches.
The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except December 25 and January 1. It is open on host country holidays. When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty in the Visitor Building to answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites.
